How to Look Good as a Bald Man

Bald is here to stay. Bald men are taking over the limelight and it's becoming a popular style in itself. Since the COVID-19 pandemic spread around the world in 2020, many men decided to take to the shaver and take matters into their own hands when it came to their hair - with most barbers being closed for long periods of time. But with that, a new era of shaved and buzzed men came into its own, and now there is more and more attention being put on bald men.

It's actually surprisingly easy to look good as a bald man, there are a few simple things that can be done in order to ensure that your look is on point and you don't just blend into the crowd. As bald men, it's important for us to focus a little more on the smaller details as we do have the slight disadvantage of being exposed on top - but this actually isn't a disadvantage at all and being bald can actually be a good thing. If you don't believe it, have a read over Bald World's 7 Great Things about being Bald.

You might still think to yourself, "how does one look good with a bald head?" So, to put your mind at ease, in this article we'll take a quick walk through some of the easy things you can do to make sure you rock the bald look and feel confident in yourself.

1. Own it

The point on the list is a simple but fundamentally important one when it comes to accepting baldness and taking control of your look. If you’re losing your hair and it bothers you in any way; if you think about it, worry about it, try to cover it up, talk about it, pose funny in pictures to stop it showing, wear a lot of hats… it’s time to shave it off. The saying goes “it’s better to be bald than balding” and I would agree 100%.

Baldness comes with a sense of confidence, it’s actually a common conception that bald men are more confident because it’s a confident move to shave your head to the skin. It can not only show a sense of dominance but also that you are comfortable in yourself, so let that confidence show and don’t hide behind a comb over.

2. Take care of your skin

One of the illusionary effects of being a bald guy is that your skin becomes the forefront of your look. Without a hair do to catch the eye or frame your face, your skin becomes the picture and the frame, so it’s important to try and take care of it.

When it comes to keeping your skin hydrated and healthy, gone are the days of a bar or soap or the same shower gel you're using to wash your downstairs man veg. Both technology and grooming standards have increased dramatically over the last few decades and men should be looking to take better care of their skin.

Particularly for us bald men, taking care of our skin is incredibly important because as I mentioned before, we have a lot more of it on show. Men with full heads of hair have something to draw the eye to and cover up a large surface area, but for the bald man, your skin is a big part of your identity, so be sure to look after it.

Lay off the booze a little and get a bit more quality sleep, do some exercise, quit the smokes, exfoliate and moisturise. Focus on bringing out some natural glow in your skin and getting rid of those bags under your eyes by taking care of yourself a bit better – I think most of us could stand to focus on ourselves a little more.

With the world being a busier and generally more polluted place than it might have been a while back, it's important to take those few extra minutes in your day to wash and look after your skin. Some really good products you'll find on the market are (mostly) reasonably priced and won't break the wallet, such as L'Oreal Men Expert Hydra Energetic Anti-Fatigue Moisturiser or NIVEA MEN DEEP Cleansing Face Wash.

3. Get a tan

This one is a kind of 2.1 point but it’s relevant. Guys who have darker skin look better with a bald head, so if it’s possible (and most importantly, if it’s safe) consider spending a bit more time in the sun. The darkness of the skin create a better contour effect and helps to hide any irregularities and blemishes you might have, which give you an all round smoother and cleaner look.

The tall, dark and handsome concept has been around for a long time and is still definitely a thing in today's world. Darkness in the western world signifies that someone is exotic, mysterious and interesting looking. Men with dark features can also appear more masculine and dominant, so try to spend a bit of time in the sun as it's not only good for getting a sexy tan, it's also proven to increase levels of Vitamin D in the body, which lifts your mood and actually helps to fight against viruses like COVID!

If you don't like the idea of going out in the sun, then you can go for an alternative option such as self tanning lotion or even a spray on tan. If you do decide to go out in the sun, please be absolutely sure to use a good quality sun tan lotion with a good SPF level. There are plenty available so there’s no excuse to not take care of your skin. Sun damage is real, permanent and extremely dangerous in the long term, so use a reputable lotion such as Nivea SPF 30 Sun Lotion Spray or Piz Buin Allergy Face Cream SPF50.

4. Work out

To be fair, this goes for everyone in general. Bald or not, man or woman, young or old, exercise is incredibly important for both physical and mental health. Now I’m not saying you need to heavy bulk and pack on the muscle, but think about toning up at least, doing a bit of resistance training, a few compound lifts like squats and bench presses and throw in a little cardio. Think of famous bald men in Hollywood… The Rock, Jason Statham, Vin Diesel, Bruce Willis etc. what do they all have in common? They’re in pretty good shape. If you don’t like the idea of going to the gym or don’t want to pay for a membership, here are a few versatile items that I currently have or have used in the past, that you can use either at home or even some outdoor areas:

As previously mentioned, exercise is an extremely important part of staying healthy, both physically and mentally. We should be aiming to do at least 30 mins of exercise every day - that could even be as simple as going for a brisk walk outside. It will help to burn excess calories, keep your muscles in use to avoid atrophy, and it will raise the good hormones in your body, giving you a mood boost. Being in shape will also help your confidence and you will feel better about yourself (you certainly won't care about being bald!)

For more information on how to build a bit of muscle, check out Bald World's article here.

Building a bit of muscle will not only make you feel more healthy but you’ll look more masculine (if that’s your aim) and your clothes will look better fitted, which leads me to my next point.

5. Dress well

When it comes to bald fashion you really have a few specific go-to looks; geeky, sharp and bad boy. Whichever you choose it’s important to remember that similarly to with your skin, without your hair being a centre piece or focal point of a look, your clothes will take more of the limelight. Consider investing in some good quality clothes that fit you properly and are age appropriate. Timeless classics include a few good quality white shirts and fitted t-shirts, a good quality smart coat and a jacket, some darker coloured jeans, quality brown leather shoes and maybe a pair of boots. The rest is up to you.

6. Grow some Facial Hair

Ever thought to yourself "why do bald men usually have beards?" Of course you have, and it's simply because it looks brilliant. Having a bit of facial hair helps to balance out your look when you're lacking on top. It divides the face from the scalp and neck and can stop you blending into one mass of single tone skin - if you don't have naturally defined features.

Now a cautionary word: if you can't grow good facial hair, please don't, because it will make you look worse. Many beard focused sites and blogs will tell you to grow it out for 1-3 months before deciding if you can pull off a reasonable looking beard. Whilst this is good advice in terms of letting the hair grow in, cover up patches, and take shape (your beard grows at very different speeds), if you notice you're only growing in a neck beard or you just have a whispy moustache, my recommendation would be to keep it clean shaved or stubbly. The reason being is that you will never be able to look clean and well-groomed with a thin or patchy beard. For some, it's just not in the genetics.

On the other hand if you can grow some decent facial hair, consider rocking some stubble (heavy stubble was voted the sexiest look by women and topped clean shaven or full beard) or feel free to go for the bearded look - it will add a masculine streak to your overall appeal and let's face it, beard fashion is heavily in play with modern men. If you do grow some facial hair, make sure you use a good quality grooming tool for example the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer which is actually my tool of choice for both my beard and head (when I'm feeling the head stubble look over the smooth and clean look).

One of the benefits of going bald is that it actually might draw your attention to a few of the items in the above list, some of which are fantastic forms of self-improvement that may help your overall confidence. Taking care of your health and dressing well are two, sure fire ways to boost not only your look and how other people see you, but they will likely make you feel better about yourself.
